Job Description

The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is an executive of the USC Care Medical Group, providing leadership to the medical group's clinical operations across all its ambulatory clinic locations. The CNO is a master's certified nurse who has medical group administration experience, and/or ambulatory experience, and the responsibility for the administration and oversight of division-wide budget development/management, program planning, human and material resources allocation at medical group. The individual ensures the development and implementation of patient care standards, professional practice standards and the continuous delivery of efficient and cost-effective patient care services in the outpatient settings and in clinical care areas. This position oversees the professional practice of registered nurses for hospital licensed clinics and free-standing locations, and is an active participant in accreditation activities, policy development, clinical practice and hospital clinical quality committees. The CNO provides direct oversight to select operations, including the Student Health and Culinary operations within the health system of Keck Medicine of USC. This position supports service, access, and service line expansion initiatives for the enterprise. This position provides leadership to acquisitions and clinical integration across the physician enterprise, including the expanding network of physicians aligned with Keck Medicine of USC. The CNO is responsible for ensuring that twenty-four-hour accountability (where needed) for the delivery of quality services and operational management of assigned area(s) is consistently provided. The position coordinates oversight with the Chief Ambulatory Officer, regional ambulatory executives, and other key stakeholders at Keck Medicine. The individual must consistently support the mission and values of the organization and acts as a role model relative to the medical group.

Essential Duties:

  • Displays understanding of governing regulations, Title 22, and JCAHO requirements, defining and maintaining the standards of nursing practice while ensuring consistency with the medical group standards. Contributes to the development and implementation of a unit-based performance improvement program which complies with JCAHO, Title 22, and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for identifying and implementing cross-training ideas and changes in staff design and task distribution which promotes a more effective method of service delivery, ensuring that the care is safe, legal and is customer service oriented.
  • Provides leadership and oversight to clinical integration team members for ambulatory care practices including new build, merger, acquisition, renovation.
  • Responsible to develop and maintain a Nursing Professional Governance structure inclusive of all ambulatory care areas.
  • Facilitates the training of nursing students and other students as necessary in coordination with the Education personnel.
  • Contributes to developing and monitoring the operational budget each year, continually analyzing both positive and negative variances, and using the budget as a tool to finding more effective methods of care delivery. Participates in planning and goal setting for the nursing department and for own unit of responsibility
  • Responsible to support and facilitate Value Based Care and population Health Care Programs. Promotes and participates in the integration of Value Based Service Organization with USC CARE & Ambulatory Services.
  • Promotes effective communication and working relationships within the nursing areas, and between nursing staff, physicians, and other departments. Serves as a coach and mentor.
  • Works with Human Resources to ensure that a workable manpower plan is in place for areas reporting to his/her position so that the areas remain able to delivery good care. Responsible for selecting and retaining qualified nursing staff to carry out the unit's care system in accorda nce with medical group philosophy and the organizational objectives. Works with the Education personnel and Human Resources to ensure that the necessary orientation, training, and continuing education is available to the staff.
  • Participates in establishing systems within the departments which support and practice shared governance management philosoph y. Contributes to the development of customer service standards and expectations. Assists in establishing methods for monitoring employee, patient and physician satisfaction with the services provided within the department.
  • Coordinates and integrates department services on intradepartmental , interdepartmental, and medical group wide levels.
  • Plans for provision of services through provision of appropriate levels of qualified, competent staff. Policies and procedures are in place to support scope of service.
  • Monitor space/resource requirements and utilization of outside resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree Nursing Degree in Nursing or related field
  • Req 7 years Minimum of 7-10 years' experience in executive nursing management position required
  • Req 7 years 7-10 years' experience as an RN required.
  • Req Advanced operational and managerial knowledge and experience in these areas, including in a hospital and/or medical group setting, is generally acquired though a minimum of ten to fifteen years of healthcare experience .

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Master's degree Nursing Master's degree in Nursing or related field preferred
  • Pref Specialty Certification Specialty certification preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Must maintain a current and valid California Registered Nursing Board License
  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $264,471.00 - $406,678.00.
