Job Description

The Income Tax Advisor will be responsible for leading the review and some preparation of the company’s tax provision and tax compliance workpapers ensuring that all filings and provisions are prepared/processed timely and accurately. They will work directly with outside tax consultants and state/federal agencies to provide necessary support and responses to inquiries. The Income Tax Advisor will need to be proficient in state and federal tax regulations regarding oil and gas companies and routine filing requirements.

A successful candidate will need to be comfortable and effective in a rapidly changing environment and will partner closely with our operations and accounting leaders to provide guidance, and support well informed decisions. The individual must be a self-starter, fast learner and capable of taking full ownership of their areas of responsibility. Effective time management and prioritization skills in managing multiple projects are essential to the success of this role.


 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help in preparation and review of the calculation and reporting processes for the Company’s quarterly income tax provision in accordance with ASC 740
  • Work directly with outside income tax consultants assisting with projects and data requests for provision and compliance work
  • Work with members of the financial/operational accounting and other groups to gather the necessary information for income tax provision and federal and state returns
  • Assist in other Income Tax Department duties as required including tax compliance, estimated federal and state tax payments and tracking/resolving Federal and State tax notices
  • Ensure all income tax compliance goals are met by providing federal and state tax data (including Texas Franchise Tax), responding to data requests and monitoring timely filing and payment of income taxes
  • Assist in the communication of quarterly income tax results and updates to executive leadership through meetings and presentations
  • Review/prepare memos to support key income tax accounting positions and the tax accounting implications of significant transactions including acquisitions and divestitures
  • Monitor external income tax developments and analyze potential income tax impacts to the Company
  • Support the effort to continually improve all Income Tax Reporting processes by monitoring and assessing current procedures
  • Review quarterly and annual SEC filings for accuracy and completeness of income tax information
  • Monitor/review monthly income tax account reconciliations; ensure normal/expected balances
  • Oversee the coordination of quarterly review and year-end audit of income tax provision with external auditors and assist in the collection and preparation of audit schedules, data and information
  • Complete special projects/reports timely and accurately as requested by management

Required Qualifications:

  • BBA/BS degree in accounting and/or master’s degree in taxation
  • CPA certification
  • Ten (10+) or more years of professional income tax experience that includes large corporation accounting for income taxes under U.S. GAAP
  • Strong knowledge of US Federal and State income tax regulations
  • Five (5+) or more years of Oil and Gas industry experience
  • Ability to effectively prioritize work, multi-task, and work under pressure with strong attention to details
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work with minimal instruction to successfully solve problems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10+) or more years of Oil and Gas industry experience
  • Knowledge of external reporting for income taxes (specifically federal and state deferred taxes and provisions) in quarterly and annual reports
  • Strong knowledge of internal control concepts
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departmental functions
  • Process oriented with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and collaborative skills
